History:  In August 1821 Spain granted Mexico Independence.  Although Moses Austin had Spanish contracts for land grants, his son Stephen F. Austin was required to renegotiate them. In the time between 1823 (when new contracts with Mexico were signed) until 1836, the new Mexican government proved unstable and tyrannical. As a result Texans revolted. On March 2, 1836, the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed and the Texas Republic was born.
